The firejam community is a vibrant and passionate group of individuals who come together to celebrate fire and flow arts, creativity, and community. A firejam is a wonderful occasion for people to gather, create, and revel in the magic of fire and movement!
Here are some key principles that guide firejams:
Inclusion and Openness: Firejams welcome everyone, regardless of skill level or background. Whether you’re a seasoned fire performer or a curious beginner, you’re part of the community.
Safety First: Safety is paramount. Firejammers prioritize proper safety protocols, fire extinguishers, and trained fire handlers. They create a secure environment for all participants.
Creative Expression: Firejams encourage artistic expression. Participants explore different fire props, choreography, and movement styles. It’s a space to unleash creativity.
Sharing Knowledge: Firejammers freely share techniques, tips, and tricks. Workshops and skill-sharing sessions foster learning and growth within the community.
Respect for the Element: Fire is revered. Participants honor its power and beauty while maintaining a healthy respect for its risks.
Community Bonding: Firejams build connections. Whether through food, drum circles, storytelling, or late-night conversations, participants form lasting friendships.
Leave No Trace: Just like Burning Man, firejams emphasize leaving the space as pristine as it was found. Leaving no trash, no trace of fire debris or litter.
Celebration of Diversity: Firejams attract people from various backgrounds, cultures, and ages. Diversity enriches the experience.
Non-Competitive Spirit: It’s not about outperforming others; it’s about personal growth and shared joy. Collaboration over competition.
Passion and Playfulness: Firejammers bring their passion and playfulness. It’s a celebration of life, art, and the mesmerizing dance of flames.
Community Efforts: Creative cooperation and collaboration are valued. Participants work together to produce the firejams, build community, and create a safe space for each other. Gifting is an important part of the communal effort. Whether you donate, help out, bring food or drinks, lampoil or other fun gifts. When we all gift and put a little bit effort for the cause of the community, the richer and brighter we all become together!
Remember, firejams are more than just to perform fire and flow arts—they’re a way of connecting with others, expressing yourself, and celebrating the magic of fire!
What is fire and flow arts about?
Fire and flow arts involve using various objects such as poi, staffs, hoops, fans, and diabolos and manipulating them. Participants create beautiful visual effects by setting these objects on fire or by using led lights props and moving them in a controlled and artistic manner.
Fire arts and flow arts share a deep and interconnected relationship, both creatively and philosophically.
Flow arts encompass various movement-based disciplines, including dance, juggling, prop manipulation, and more. Fire spinning and fire dancing emerged as a subset of flow arts. These involve manipulating fire props (such as poi, staffs, hoops, fans) in mesmerizing patterns.
Flow State: Achieving the “flow state” is central to both fire arts and flow arts. The flow state is a mental state of complete absorption, where time seems to vanish, and the performer is fully immersed in the present moment. Fire performers often experience this heightened state while dancing with flames. The fire becomes an extension of their body, and they lose themselves in the performance.
Intense Focus: Both fire and flow artists require deep concentration. Fire performers must be fully present to handle the flames safely.
Artistic Expression: Fire and flow arts allow artists to express themselves creatively. The dance with fire becomes a form of self-expression.
Risk and Reward: Fire and flow arts involve risk (due to the fire and the object element), but the reward is a unique and captivating performance.
Flow Arts Diversity: Flow arts continue to evolve, cross-pollinating with other movement practices. A flow artist might juggle, hula hoop, slackline, dance, practice acrobatic moves or spin fire—all within the same creative space. The sense of community fosters growth, learning, and mutual inspiration is very important! In essence, fire and flow arts intertwine—a dance of flames and movement that transcends physical boundaries and sparks the soul.
